It was nearly seven, and Mia was sitting on her bunk, gazing out the window as she absentmindedly sharpened several hunting knives. The knives were magical and didn't need sharpening, but at least it gave her something to do as she waited for the moon to enter its first quarter. Ever since she had come back to Camp, the girl had gone moon-gazing whenever the moon entered a new phase, and she wasn't about to stop now. Besides, it was rather calming. And the fact that the moon was finally visible made it all the more so. The past few days had been miserable; with the combination of the new moon and the absence of daylight savings time, Camp had been unnervingly dark after six.
There was another reason Mia had been watching the moon obsessively lately; she had been hoping that Artemis would reappear one night and ask the hunters to go on a hunt again. It made sense that the goddess of the moon would appear on a night when the moon entered a new phase, so Mia anxiously searched the skies every week. But so far, her search had yielded no results. Although Camp wasn't that bad and she had made a couple of friends, the girl couldn't wait to rejoin the hunt, traveling across the world on adventure after adventure.
The cabin door creaked open, and Mia resisted the urge to turn around and instead focused on the barely audible footsteps that approached her. "April? That you?" she asked hesitantly. Lately, Mia had been trying to learn how to identify people by their footsteps. She figured that once she had mastered this, identifying animals and monsters by their footsteps would be easier. Most of the older huntresses had already perfected this skill and many others, much to the bewilderment of Mia.
