Sexual Orientation: He's not sure yet.

Hair: Devin has long (compared to most guys his age), thick, black hair that reaches past his ears, almost to his neck. He keeps it neatly groomed and gets extremely annoyed if someone tries to touch it.

Height: 5'11''

Playby: Avan Jogia
Dressing Style:
"We cannot afford to look like that! Now put on something decent." From an early age, Devin was taught to keep his appearance as neat as possible and to always appear presentable. Thus, he takes care of his appearance and actually puts consideration into his outfit. Most days, he'll wear flannel shirts or button-up shirts with jeans. If Devin's feeling a bit more casual, he'll just throw on a clean graphic t-shirt and khaki shorts. Whatever he wears, he prefers more subdued and muddied colors. Devin’ll also wear things that are close-fitting, but not tight. Otherwise, he's suffocating. And if it's too baggy? He's drowning in a sea of fabric.
General Appearance:
"No one will respect you if you slouch!" With this in mind, Devin has immaculate posture. His shoulders are always drawn back; his back very straight, as if he had an iron rod for a spine; and his chin is tilted up slightly.
"Stop scowling!" Devin often has trouble with this one. He used to wear a permanent frown or a blank expression, hoping not to be bothered. Although he doesn't scowl as much these days, it takes conscious effort to make him smile, and even then, it usually looks forced and awkward.
"Get your lazy ass of the couch and get some exercise!"This is something Devin's father is more than happy to tell him, and Devin has been kicked out of the house because his father deemed that he needed more exercise. As a result, Devin is well-built and muscular.
What Makes Them Them
Personality Description:
"Hurry up and figure something out! We haven't got all day." Devin is very decisive, constantly driven by his father to act as quickly as possible in an effort to save time. His father thought dawdling and wasting time was seen as one of the greatest sins one could commit. As a result, Devin is able to think very quickly and often makes snap decisions. He's also very efficient. Managing his time efficiently is not a problem, and procrastinating on something is unheard of to him. He'll get a task done as soon as possible or else it'll drive him crazy.
"Family is everything! If you don't have that, you don't have anything." This is perhaps his father's favorite saying, and one that has been driven into Devin's mind since the day he was born. Devin has been raised to believe that the most important thing in a person's life was family, and one owed his family everything. Blood relations were strong enough to stand anything, and it was nearly impossible to turn one's back against a family member no matter what. If one did, it was the ultimate betrayal. As a result of his father's long-winded rants on the importance of family, Devin is very family-orientated. This is especially apparent when he is around his younger brother. Although he doesn't see his half-siblings as actual family, Devin is still very loyal to them merely because they are related by blood. Anyone who insults a family member's of Devin's, has insulted Devin as well.
"Be a gentleman! Especially since they're not expecting one." Growing up as a minority is never easy, something both Devin and his father are hyper-aware of. Both have faced racism, both subtle and overt, and stereotyping. However, his father has taught Devin to be as polite as possible. In a society where some expect minorities to be stupid and cruel, one must be polite in order to help shatter stereotypes. As a result, Devin is always saying "please" and "thank you", holding open doors for others, and generally trying to treat everyone with respect. Although he might seem strange and uptight to others, he has not abandoned his manners.
"Give them what they want..." Generally, Devin is a people-pleaser and tries to make others feel better and/or help others. He can be a bit of a push-over when it comes to matters that he deems rather trivial. Devin doesn't mind making small sacrifices if it means that the other person will get what s/he wants. In fact, it can turn out to work in his favor because he'll be better liked. That being said, his father also says...
"...but always trust yourself in the end." Although Devin will concede to the little things, he's extremely stubborn when it comes to the bigger things. He's extremely intuitive and often makes decision based on gut feelings, and these instincts usually turn out to be right more often than not. As a result, once he has made up his mind on something, it is next to impossible to try to dissuade him. No amount of reasoning can cause him to reconsider his position, and he'll do whatever necessary to make sure things go his way. This is probably his biggest flaw, as it has led him to trouble many times before. Also, his assertiveness can be seen as cockiness as he always believes he's right.
"Always brace yourself for the worst!" Devin has embraced these words fully, and is always looking at the negative of any situation. He's inherently pessimistic and can be a bit of a downer in discussions about any plans or ideas one might have. He'll immediately skip over the good and go straight to the flaws or what could potentially go wrong. His pessimism is such an integral part of his personality that if Devin can't find something wrong, he'll start to worry.
"Shut up and observe! You'll actually understand people that way." Finally, Devin's perceptiveness is probably what defines him the most. He's rather good at reading people and finds that he enjoys it. Because of his quiet demeanor, he can be overlooked, leaving him to observe a situation unnoticed. Devin tends to notice the little things and is good at solving problems, especially the ones that seem to be impossible.
Likes: spicy food, the color dark green, baked goods, nature, being right against all odds, classical guitar, guitar music
Dislikes: bland food, needles, bananas and banana-flavored anything, meat
Fears:
- The possibility that he will become a failure in his father's eyes.
- Needles... He really, really hates them. Devin'd rather be cut by a sword than given a shot.
- Deep water. His father's favorite movie, Jaws, scarred him as a young child, and he can't swim very well.
Secrets:
- He's an amazing cook. It's not so much of a secret as it is just something he likes to keep quiet about. After all, guys aren't "supposed" to be good cooks. Devin bakes as well.
- Devin's near-sighted in his right eye. It annoys him to no end, but so far, he's been okay relying on his left eye. He doesn't want his father to know because he doesn't want to waste money on an eye exam or glasses.
- Sometimes, he really wishes his father would stop criticizing him for a day. However, he realizes that this is his father's way of showing concern and love for him. Because of this, he enjoys camp since he doesn't have his father constantly nagging him (although his father sometimes sends letters full of reminders).
- He's always thought Matthew was a bit spoiled, but Devin loves him too much to care.
- He once tried a cigarette. It ended with him nearly coughing his lungs up, and he doesn't plan to do it again.
- Not only did he try to smoke, but he also stole the pack of cigarettes. Devin later left a $10 bill at the store because he felt so guilty. He's still terrified someone found out.
- Ever since he learned that his mother was a Greek goddess, he's not sure what to believe in anymore. What if everything he knew was a lie?
- He still keeps a ratty teddy bear named Dhanya under his pillow at his house.
- Devin plays guitar whenever he has free time. Why is this a secret? He's afraid his father will think it's a waste of time.
Ambitions:
- To live past twenty and not die as many demigods do.
- To own a vintage classical guitar
- To see his father's homeland, India, one day.
- To learn to write Hindi as he can already speak it. Also to learn to speak and maybe write Gujarati. And he'd like to know what those mysterious Hindi curse words his father occasionally mutters mean.
Powers: He's a good cook and has minor control over plants (chlorokinesis).
Family and History
Personal History:
"America!" people would exclaim. "America is the land of the rich." These were the words that drove Marut Sampat, a rather scrawny, but passionate, young man, who was more boy than man, to leave everything behind and try his luck in America. He was a bit naive, fresh out of college, and convinced that America would make him a millionaire.
He was dead wrong.
After moving, it soon became apparent that even if he did have the education to get a decent job, his dismal English prevented him from being hired for anything other than menial work. Marut felt cheated. This wasn't supposed to happen! No one had ever told him about this. Yet, it had happened, and he had to do something about it.
Over the next few years, Marut took jobs that no one wanted. Meanwhile, he took classes to improve his English speaking and writing skills. He labored day and night, saving up as much as possible, still convinced that someday, he'd get a job with a six-figure salary.
It was because of these classes that he first attracted Demeter's attention. One night, after class, he ran into Demeter. Literally. He helped her up, apologizing profusely. His manners and good looks struck her, but his plight impressed the goddess the most. The two engaged in brief conversation as Demeter inquired as to why he was in such a rush. It was then that Demeter learned that Marut was moonlighting and taking classes on top of that. The two soon parted, and although the memory soon faded for Marut, Demeter didn't forget about him.
Several years later, Marut had a stable job at a financial corporation. Every Tuesday, for lunch, he walked across the street to the cafe across the street. Coincidentally (or perhaps not so coincidentally), Demeter was waitressing there. He didn't recognize her, but she almost immediately remembered him. The goddess struck up a conversation with him, and these conversation grew longer with each visit he made. Soon, Marut and Demeter were dating.
The relationship lasted for over a year before Demeter left. She had just realized that Marut was planning on proposing to her and knew that she couldn't marry him. A few weeks later, Demeter also found out that she was pregnant, and this only reassured her that she had made the right decision even if it meant breaking Marut's heart.
Marut was devastated when she left. For a while, he was depressed, just barely getting by. He had no idea what he had done wrong. It wasn't until Demeter sent him Devarsh and a letter that Marut recovered completely from his heartache. He grew angry that she had led him on, knowing that eventually, she would have to leave. It was then that he swore that he wouldn't think of Demeter again. He had more important things to worry about... namely, the baby.
From the start, Marut vowed to do everything he could for Devarsh to insure that his son would never have to experience a life like his. He read countless parenting books and invested all of his free time in caring for Devarsh, showering him with love. However, Marut expressed his love in an unusual way. Instead of spoiling Devarsh, Marut was extremely strict. He believed it was the only way to ensure that Devarsh would grow up to have a decent future.
Devarsh never really minded, primarily because his father's strictness was the only thing he knew. The boy thought it was perfectly normal. In addition, he understood his father's difficult situation. Devarsh was able to realize that his father was under extraordinary pressure as a minority single father living in a foreign country with no relatives. Although he sometimes longed for praise, hugs, bedtime stories, and other things that his peers received from their parents, Devarsh never complained, instead choosing to focus on pleasing his father.
One of the things about Devarsh that annoyed Marut the most was his dyslexia. Marut believed that the only way to a good future was through a good education, and the fact that Devarsh wasn't doing well in his classes at school upset him greatly. As a means to "overcome" dyslexia, Marut forced Devarsh to study for hours on end every day. Although it helped somewhat, Marut was never completely satisfied.
Despite this tremendous pressure, Devarsh managed to find time for other activities. Despite his quiet demeanor, he made a few friends. It was through his best friend that he discovered his love for music. Or, to be more specific, classical guitar. After saving up enough money, Devarsh finally bought a guitar and taught himself to play while his father was out working overtime. His best friend also bestowed upon Devarsh his American name, Devin.
Meanwhile, Marut was struggling to balance his time between his work and Devarsh. On top of this, he still missed Demeter, although he tried to refuse to acknowledge this. He finally broke during the fifth anniversary of the day she had left him. On that day, Marut visited the cafe, where the two had first met. Demeter had been expecting this and was waiting for him. Upon seeing her, he immediately tried to exit. However, Demeter stopped him, begging to talk. Marut finally relented, and the two went to Demeter's mortal dwelling. With the help of a few drinks and volatile emotions, the two had a one night stand. When Marut woke up to find that she was gone, he cursed himself for being such a fool.
Nine months later, Marut received another boy from Demeter; his name was Manjeet. Devin was extremely excited at the prospect of having a little brother and spent much of his time curiously watching over Manjeet. Despite the age gap, the two brothers were extremely close, and Devin was the one who gave Manjeet his American name, Matthew. Matthew looked up to Devin, wanting to be just like him.
At age 13, Devin spotted his first monster, sitting in the subway car next to his. As soon as he saw the empousai's beady eyes stare back into his, Devin made a run for it. Luckily, he got away before the empousai could exit the subway. He told his father about this strange experience, prompting Marut to sit Devin down and have the conversation he had been dreading since the day he had received Devin and the letter.
Marut explained to Devin his divine parentage and that he would have to go to a special camp for people like him. Naturally, Devin was shocked. However, it did make sense and explain why the being he had seen at the subway had flaming hair and a furry leg.
Marut and Matthew accompanied Devin to Camp, and in one of those rare moments when his father actually displayed physical affection, Marut hugged Devin, whispering, "Make me proud." Whenever he's at Camp, Devin remembers those words and tries to live up to them. After arriving, Devin was quickly claimed by Demeter.
So far, Devin has only attended Camp during the summers. However, because of the mysterious sickness, it has been decided that it would be safer if he stayed at Camp year-long for a bit.
