Alyssa literally had to force the bread down her throat, it was so dry. She choked it down as fast as she could. Right now she had her one-minute timed food/drink break. You get one every two weeks, but since Alyssa was one of the oldest Apollos, she often let the younger kids take her's, because it was much harsher on their undeveloped bodies. This was her first food in almost a month. She took a three-second drink from a Dixie cup every four days. The girl was practically a camel.
Her actual food break was actually supposed to be in three hours, but she had taken it three hours early because she had just woken up after being unconscious for four hours, which was the longest she had been out. Since she was older, her body was a lot tougher than the other's, so she could stay up longer. She usually passed out in a chair for about five minutes once every week or so, but other than that, she tried to remain active.
Working the in the infirmary was brutal. She hadn't slept in five days. Five days ago, she was allowed to have a ten minute nap because she was giving her food to children a lot. She only kept going because she had to, and it felt nice to be helping people.
A few days ago, Alyssa did something dreadful to her wrist.. She had accidentally stepped right into a desk - she was such a klutz sometimes - and fell backwards. Her nearly-psychic ability had been slightly fading lately because of her unhealthy state. She immediately before she hit the ground that if she landed on her elbows it would be dreadful, so she twisted her wrists around. Now her wrists were sore, stiff and puffy. She had them wrapped in Ace Bandages for stability, but it still pained her when she moved them. It made healing even harder than it was, her being an unnatural healer and all.
You see, Alyssa was a learned healer, so healing was a bit more difficult for her to cope with. Healing didn't come completely naturally to her, and it had taken her a few years to get good at. Sure, she was a decent healer, but she wasn't the best. I'm so stupid, she thought to herself as she treated a patient I should have seen this sickness coming. Alyssa sighed as someone tapped her on the shoulder. "Yes?" she asked said sadly, starting to turn around.
