``she could have conquered the world
Reading was so... normal. Everyone did it, everyone loved at least some books. You would have to be pretty hard-pressed to find someone who didn't like any reading in any book or any reading of anything. And even though it appeared to be that a skinny blonde was reading, she wasn't. Because this was Amber James, in the middle of Camp Halfblood. So, of course, she wasn't doing anything normal. Rather, she was just staring at the page in her book, not taking in any of the words. Honestly, she hadn't paid much attention too the book she had grabbed, she had just taken one to try and occupy her time. That didn't work, because the whole time she was just thinking. Her brain went from Ilo, her newish boyfriend, to Josh, her older brother, to her mom, who was sick, to her flight home sometime soon, to who she was going to take with her. Her brain settled on thinking about what it would be like to take Skye with her... she had already asked, so it was too late to say no. Not that she didn't want Skye to come with her, she just didn't know who else. Maybe Ilo... he would be a cheerful person to have along to try and ease the tension, plus he was Amber's boyfriend (almost? They where dating), so he had automatic rights to this kind of thing. But what would her dad think? Some shaggy-haired hippie dating his daughter. Oi vey. He was going to have a cow. But as far as Amber was concerned, it was her life, and she could do what she wanted too. It's not like her dad was actually a role model. I mean, he had walked out on their family! He wasn't Amber's dad. Just like Apollo -- he was just another nameless face that Amber had to think of being related too. He was Amber's father, not her dad. Like, if he ever tried to tell Amber what to do, she would obey because Apollo was, you know, a god. Not because she respected him as a parent.
Her brain flicked away from her dad, and onto Ilo again. His words replayed in her mind, "You're beautiful, you should know that." she heard him say again. Was she really? All she saw herself as was another tear in the drop of rain. She was no one special, just a girl who was struggling to hold it together. Little did she know that she had the skill, the strength, and the will to do whatever she wanted to do. If her mind wasn't so warped and controlled by fear and insecurity, she would have been able to accomplish so much. But at that moment, all she saw was a tan face with blonde hair. As Ilo's words replayed again, Amber put down her book and walked inside of her cabin. There was only one other person in there, and they where sleeping. So Amber swiftly slipped into the bathroom and locked the door. She didn't get it... it was just a face -- eyes, nose and mouth. What was so beautiful about it? She had even gained a few pounds from having to stay in bed and eating from being sick. So why was Ilo so in love, and why did Skye even give the slightest glance in her direction? It's not like she was that great on the inside, too. She was messy, loud, and she harvested so much anger inside of her heart, and she really didn't know how to express it. The result was bitter tears and looking towards the toilet, wondering if she needed to lose a few pounds by throwing up. But in the end, her will power told her that it was relentless. If she started going down that road, she would never, ever stop. It would be the end of her.
Sighing, Amber slowly made her way out of the cabin. Usually, the sunlight made her feel warm and it made her see hope. Now all she saw was her dad. Relentlessly trying to get everyones attention with his sun chariot. People where dancing around the camp, going Pegasus-riding, going on the rock wall, all kinds of stuff. Seeing everyone so happy seemed to make Amber more sad. No matter how much they tried to hide it, she could see through the disguise they put on. The camp was in mortal danger, and it was showing. There where clouds inside the camp borders, and it was chilly outside, even with the sunlight. Amber was only in a striped sweater, a grey tank top and shorts, though she felt fine. Most of the campers had jackets and long jeans on with their camp shirts, so they where all better off then she was. She had no where to go, so she slowly made her way to the edge of the forest and walked along the side until she saw the amphitheater. The girl walked towards it, trying not to be seen, but a few people glanced in her direction, and a few more people stared at her head injury. Amber found that it was quite empty, so she laid down on one of the long benches. She hadn't been getting much sleep, so she was exhausted. That with her head, her mom and everything else made her heart want to crawl out onto the bench and then get stomped on until it died. The only think that could have possibly made it worse would be seeing Pandora, or Pandora and Skye. But he likelihood of them coming there together wasn't so big. It was possible, but not big enough for Amber to actually be worried. Nonetheless, there was a creeping feeling encasing Amber, like her fear was about to come true. She pushed it down, though. The idea that kept her fear company was the sad fact that even the thought of seeing Pandora made her terrified. Things like death, terrorists and the possible fact that a Hermes camped could get C4, that was what was supposed to scare Amber.
But alas, it was the sad world they lived in.
