What Makes Them Them
Personality Description:
To start, Rayalen is a very compassionate person. She cares a great deal about other people, and will go well out of her way to make another person's life easier. But that isn't to say she gets taken advantage of. She is very aware of how much she does for other people, so if she begins to feel used she usually backs away from that person.
One service she provides more so than most any other, is advice. People come to her all the time just to talk about their problems, and although she doesn't always know how to help someone with their problem, she will almost always listen to them and give them the chance to get their problems off their chest.
She is incredibly sympathetic towards other people, she's been through a lot, so she understands easily how people are feeling.
One of her problems is she is very emotional. Oftentimes she feels so bad for the people who are complaining to her that she herself begins to feel their pain. Even without the help of other people she can get herself quite down in the dumps over small things. Especially when she starts thinking about her lot in life too much. This happens much more often than she would like.
Therefore, it isn't uncommon to have her bad days. She has days were she doesn't want to be social or friendly, and on these days she can be dangerous to herself if she gets alone too much or thinks about stuff too much. But these phases usually don't last long, a day or two at most, then she's back to herself. One way she deals with it is she puts in her headphones and drowns her pain with music.
It can be difficult for her though, for one because she rarely talks about her own problems and feelings. As Bella said in twilight, Rayalen is the "suffer in silence type." She doesn't like to talk about her issues not because she is shy or scared to tell people, but she knows that people have their own issues and she doesn't want to make them worry about her, or bother them or waste their time. Therefore these feelings get bottled up inside and eventually cause her depressed phases that I mention just above.
She is also prone to nightmares. It is a common occurrence for her to wake up in a fright. Milo comments on her sleeping habits fairly regularly, saying that he can tell she has nightmares because she tosses and turns more on those nights. Her nightmares are most often of her drowning. These are likely her buried memories of the boat crash that caused her amnesia.
She kind of a loner. She doesn't like to be in large groups of people. She has several people that she considers a friend, but very few that she actually spends much time with. She is more than happy to spend the afternoon alone, sitting down with a good book, than out and about with her friends, now, everybody needs a day out now and again, but for the most part, she's good on her own.
Rayalen loves music. She loves listening to music, and never goes anywhere without her iPod. She also enjoys writing, both creative writing and writing songs. She might not be as good as some of the Apollo kids, but she is decent enough.
She has a tendency to be impatient. Her "brother" is the son of Chronos, so he has instilled in her a very acute understanding of time. She stresses more so than he does about it though. She always worries about wasting time, and she hates the feeling that her time is being wasted for whatever reason.
Her brother is a realist. She is as well, as she has some what adopted his thinking in that manner. He taught her to see everything that is going on, and decide what is most likely to happen, not what they wish or fear happening. They might have the ideal scenario in their head, but they don't expect that to happen every time. One of their mottos is, "Hope for the best, plan for the worst."

Family and History
Personal History:
Lucy Johnson had always loved the water. She'd been born in California, and grew up surfing on the beach. She loved sea life, and when she reached college age, she studied marine biology, and then she found herself in North Carolina. She was part of a group of scientists, who were researching the behavior of a rare type of fish.
She was walking on the beach one day, when she met a young-ish looking man. He was handsome. He had long hair, longer than she usually would have gone for in a man, but once they started talking she realized he was quite intelligent.
He seemed to know a lot about the ocean. He knew where the fish she was looking for was, and he showed her a lot of things that she'd never noticed before. It didn't take long for the two to fall in love, and then, as it goes, they had Rayalen.
But Lucy began to get impatient. Everything was wonderful, but she wasn't happy. She wanted Trey - the name he'd given her - to marry her. She wanted Rayalen to have a legitimate father. But of course Trey couldn't commit to that. And eventually he got tired of her asking and had to leave. He just disappeared into the ocean.
So Lucy raised Rayalen on her own. The two were very close, and they did pretty much everything together. Rayalen would tell Lucy all about the guy she liked in school, Lucy would give her tips on how to get their attention and how to be "mysterious" - cause guys like that you know. It went on like that for several years.
But then, as it always does, tragedy struck. Rayalen was thirteen, and Lucy had to take a trip out to sea to check on those special fish that she was out here for in the first place. Rayalen begged her mother to take her with her, and after a few minutes Lucy consented.
The day started out normal. They got out into the open ocean and all was well. They had a picnic on the boat and then Lucy began to prepare for her dive. Rayalen was to stay on the boat.
An hour later, her mother was heading down, and Rayalen sat on the boat with a book. The weather was perfect, sunny and windy, like it always is on the ocean. Raya was reading, enjoying the sunshine, and she happened to clanged out over the horizon.
There was a wave. Even from here she could tell it was huge. She watched it, and it seemed to be getting higher. She ran into the engine room to call down to her mom on the radio. "Mom?"
Silence for a few seconds, and then, "Rayalen? What's wrong?"
"There's a wave! A really, really big wave!"
Rayalen waited as her mom seemed to be thinking it through, and then, "Alright Raya. I'll be up in a minute."
Rayalen put the radio down and ran back up to look at the wave. It was still getting closer. It was still getting taller. She'd heard of these things. These monstrous waves that seemed to come out of nowhere. She'd heard of entire cruise ships being flipped over because of them. She knew their little boat wouldn't stand a chance.
She'd been watching it for a few minutes when suddenly she heard her mom's voice behind her. "Rayalen?"
Rayalen turned and ran to help her mother out of the water. "Look! Look at that wave! It's huge! Do you see it!?"
Lucy looked past her and nodded, 'Yes Raya, I see it, but we need to get out of here if we want to get away from it. Hurry."
Lucy hurried to get the air tank off and her flippers, then ran into the engine room and started the boat up again. Then they were moving. But they had a long way to go before they could escape the giant wave.
They kept looking back, and watched in horror as the great wave got closer, and taller. Soon, her mother sighed and looked at her. "Raya, we aren't going to be able to out run it."
The then thirteen year old girl nodded. She'd kind of known this was going to happen. The two of them went and sat one the boat deck to watch it. Lucy had silent tears falling down her face. "I'm sorry Raya, I shouldn't have brought you out here today."
Rayalen shook her head, "If you hadn't then I would have lost you and been alone. That would have been worse."
Lucy sighed, and gave her daughter a tight hug. "I love you Rayalen."
Rayalen nodded and clinged to her mother. "I love you too."
This is where they were then the boat started to tip side ways. The wave was here. The boat lept upwards as the wave pushed it up, and then it tipped. Rayalen screamed as the small boat flipped upside down, and she and her mother were both thrown out into the ocean, with the boat landing on top of them.
There was a moment of pure terror as she saw the boat falling on top of her, then it hit, and there was nothing.
----------------------------------------------------------------
"Rayalen?"
She heard him before she saw him, but then, that was because she hadn't opened her eyes yet. That would come in a moment...but...what had happened? Where was she? And who was Rayalen? What a strange name...Rayalen.
"Rayalen?"
She groaned as she opened her eyes. There was a boy. He was leaning over her and looked pretty concerned. She didn't know who he was or why he was there, and terror creeped into her mind. "Who are you?"
Then another thought creeped in. How old was she? She couldn't be that old, probably twelve or thirteen...where was her mom? Usually a mom was around when something bad happened right? "Where's my mom?"
Woah, woah, calm down. I'm Milo. And i don't know where your Mom is. Where was the last time you saw her?" He was trying to get her to calm down. Was he serious?
But then his question sank in. When WAS the last she'd seen her? She nearly screamed when she realized she didn't even know what her mom looked like. Hell, she didn't even know what SHE looked like. "I don't know. I don't remember."
The boy, Milo? Sighed heavily. "Well, do you remember anything?"
She searched her mind, trying to find something to cling to...favorite movie, color, food. What kind of music did she like? But there was nothing. It was like she'd just appeared out of nowhere. She shook her head.
"Not even your name?"
She took a guess. "Rayalen."
Another sigh, "You remember?"
She shrugged."That's what you called me just now. I made an educated guess."
He frowned, then after a moment, "Well, lets get you somewhere and get you cleaned up."
Eew. She noticed how utterly disgusting she was. She was absolutely drenched in salt water, and now sand had also made a thick layer over her skin. She groaned as she started to sit up. She was exhausted.
He picked her up, almost effortlessly...but not quite, and carried her. She doesn't really know how far, she kind of fell asleep, and when he started to set her down they were at a bus stop...but even that didn't last long because she fell asleep again almost as soon as she sat down. In face, the whole next day or so passed in a bit of a blur.
Then she woke up in a hotel room, or at least it sure looked like one to her. For a moment she was scared and confused all over again, then she saw Milo sitting in a chair in the corner. He had a newspaper on his lap and his head in his hands. He looked upset. "Milo?"
His head jerked up to look at her, and he stood up and walked over. He didn't say anything, and that on its own made her nervous. He sat down on the edge of the bed and handed her the newspaper. It wasn't hard to see what she was supposed to be looking at. The headline read, "TRAGEDY AT SEA" she started to read it, and sure enough, it was definitely a tragedy.
It was the story of a scientist and her daughter. A friend of the family said that Lucy Johnson, the biologist, was taking her daughter out to see a rare species of fish. Apparently, the ship was out in the ocean, and was hit by a tsunami. It didn't have a chance against the monstrous wave, and sank. No survivors found.
Raya spent the next few days in a stupor. She was so confused. There was a picture on the newspaper of her and her mom. It was her, no doubt about it, but she didn't remember it. None of it. She was terribly upset, but not for the loss of her mom. She was heartbroken that she'd apparently had a life, with a mother who loved her, and she couldn't remember it. She began having nightmares, she'd wake up crying, and Milo, being the caring, older brother type, would just pull her to him and let her cry.
A month later they made it to camp half-blood. Rayalen was skeptical, but Milo claimed that their life would get better. He would think so. For the first little bit they stayed in the Hermes cabin, as all newbies do...but then Milo was claimed, and Rayalen was alone. But it wasn't long before she too, was claimed.
She and Milo were out on the lake canoeing, enjoying themselves and minding their own business, when a group of naiads decided they wanted to be...mischievous. They came over and tipped the boat.
Milo, being the calmer one of the two, acted. Rayalen, panicked and reacted. Action, and reaction. Milo paused time and was able to easily avoid the naiads. Raya on the other hand, was too panicky to even think straight. The flipping of the boat had triggered a flash back to her mom's boat sinking, and pure terror set in. The naiads, realizing that Rayalen was going to drown, and not particularly wanting to get blamed for it, reached out to help her, but she was too terror stricken, and she thought they were attacking her, thought they were going to drag her down into the lake and drown her.
In her terror, she felt energy building, with a scream she released it, and a current swept through the lake. The naiads were scent swirling around in the water, and Rayalen shot up to the surface. There, she found Milo and the two of them swam to the shore line where, of course, a crowd had gathered.
They were all oo-ing and ah-ing and pointing above her head. She looked up to see a holographic thing above her head, and it kind of looked like a conch shell. She smiled, she remembered learning about this in Greek mythology, although how she suddenly remembered this was a mystery. There was no doubt in her mind, it was Triton. Poseidon's son, and a minor god.
That day she was moved out of the Hermes cabin, finally, and into the Minor God's cabin with Milo. And over time she began to put pieces together. That was how she'd survived her mother's boat sinking.
She acclimated easily to her new cabin. Her brother was there and now that she didn't feel quite as alone she had fewer nightmares and even started to make friends. Yes, our little Raya is settling quite well in Camp Half-Blood.
