Welcome to Wildwood Springs, a safe house for young men and women who need help getting out of a dangerous home situation. Whether you've been abused by your parents, your significant other is hitting you and your children or you just need a place to stay for a while, Wildwood Springs is the place for you. We accept everyone, whether you're LGBTQ or straight, no matter what background, you're welcome here.
WWS was started 13 years ago in Birmingham, Alabama by a young man who was in an abusive relationship. Michael Hawthorne was incensed by how he was treated when he called 911 and was brushed off when he said he was being battered by his spouse, all because his spouse was another man. Angry that there were no resources for LGBTQ people in his home town, Michael pooled his resources together and left home, staying at a shelter until he was able to buy an abandoned foster home. With some help from friends, he worked on getting funding to advertise a safe house for abused and abandoned women and men from all walks of life. Within a couple years (and with a LOT of resistance from everyone from his more conservative neighbors to the local churches) Michael had gotten the safe house up and running and managed to get funding from the Human Rights Campaign and smaller LGBTQ charities.
Still, the towns people are upset that such a place exists and the local government is working really hard to get WWS and places like it shut down, going so far as to threaten cutting the funding and arresting Mr. Hawthorne and his colleagues for everything from tax fraud to drug possession. So far nothing has managed to stick. Though WWS has as many protestors as the local Planned Parenthood, it is still running to this day. The town is torn between the people fighting to keep WWS open and the conservative, church going citizens of Birmingham trying to get it shut down. Which side are you on?
