`` specifics
Personality Description: Max is, literally, a sociopath. She doesn't understand human emotion, and quite frankly, doesn't really care. She lives by the basic law that if you're a jackass to her, she'll be a jackass to you. If you're loyal to her, she'll be loyal to you. A lot of people would say she's "brave" or "tough", but she sees it more as she doesn't really care about the consequences of retaliation. Basically, she does what needs to be done, and doesn't care for anything that doesn't need to be done.
She has a natural over-protectiveness. Most of the time it's for people she's involved with in one way or another, but for small children she may or may not know, she can be a bit of a protector. All in all, you can probably count on her to beat up that bully, if needed. In that sense, she's a bit of a natural leader, but she fears being in charge, because she feels like she won't be as good of a leader as her sister was. Therefor, she absolutely despises being a counselor, but she feels obligated to stay at camp. Besides, where else would she go?
Some people would describe her with the "tomboy" character trope, but that's not really the case at all. She doesn't dress in jeans and a t-shirt because she hates being "girly" -- she sees nothing wrong with being girly, she just tends to prefer practicality over fashion. Which is why, in the small occasion when she does dress up, you can bet there's a knife strapped to her leg. In fact, she can sometimes enjoy being "dressed up" if the occasion arrives, it's just that she doesn't like taking the time to dress herself up.
Max is very antisocial; she finds dealing with people to be tedious, and though she generally finds socializing to be worth the struggle, she likes to take a lot of time to herself to recharge and not have to figure out complex human emotions. She generally spends her free time in the arena, as fighting gives her a chance to loose herself, and she enjoys the physical challenge as well. She also likes swimming, and reading (or rather, listening to audio books, because of her dyslexia).
She has quite a few fears. One being tight spaces, because it triggers her PTSD. Yes, she has Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. Tight spaces triggers it because her father used to lock her in the upstairs closet if she did something wrong, or sometimes she and her sister would hide in a tight space if he came home drunk. Something else that triggers her PTSD is running, and although it doesn't happen often, she can have a violent flashback if that occurs. Another trigger is hugging (or kissing, or any other intimate activity), but that generally only lasts for a second before she regains her senses.
Some of her other fears include hospitals, needles, and the underground, though she isn't quite sure why.
Powers: Because of her mother, she has a very strong desire, or urge to win that can generally motivate her more than others. This isn't really a "power", but it's worth mentioning.
`` history & family
Personal History: Nike was beautiful, not as beautiful as Aphrodite; but beautiful, nonetheless. For that very reason, she caught the eye of Sam Jacobson when he was in a local swimming contest in Tennessee. She had just come too watch, but John with all his winning and so on came to her after one of his contests. He had already spoken too her, so he just needed to go in and ask when he wanted to ask.
"Niki," he called; he had emerged from the locker room, a medal from winning the contest on his chest. He saw Nike (Niki Winning, as he knew her. Do I even have to explain the name?) and had ran towards her, after calling her name several more times. Nike turned around and smiled at him. "Hello, Sam." She said.
"Hey, Niki, do you want to go out and get a drink or something. Like, now?" Sam asked, cocky as he always was. Nike was a sucker for a guy with a winning streak, so she accepted. That night, they went to a local bar and Sam became drunk while Niki[/e] just let loose, considering she was a goddess so she could not get drunk. Sam took her back to his apartment and they slept together.
After that night, John and Niki[/e] met up several more times and did — well, the same exact thing. But all Sam saw her as was another prize, and he thought that as he had slept with her almost every week for a month or so, that he had won her. So when she came and told him she was pregnant, he disregarded her.
"Well, Niki, that's your fault." He said. "Why weren't you taking birth control?" Nike got mad, naturally. The night before he had a sort of "Olympics" but localized to their town in Tennesse, she put a curse on him that he would never win anything again. But he didn't know the truth, so he thought that when he lost every competition and every race he entered for the next month, it was his fault.
Nike vanished, only to reappear several months later with a baby. She promptly forced him to take it, so he gave up his contests and started raising his daughter, Jeanine. He was humbled and kinder when he got a daughter, so she was raised well until Jeanine was four. Nike hadn't shown herself sense dropping the baby off, but she came back. She only came back because she had seen him become kinder from Olympus. They had several dates, leaving Jeanine with a nanny. Soon, Nike was pregnant again.
Sam left her for dead because he couldn't see how he could raise another child. But by the time Jeanine was five, she had a little sister, Maxine Grace Jacobson (nicknamed Max). John was angry at Nike, and struggling with the two children, fell behind on his taxes, and had very little free time. So he became very bitter.
When Max was two and Jeanine was seven, he started drinking. Sometimes he would come home drunk; lets just say, Max and Jeanine quickly started to learn that they needed to be out of the house or hidden when he came home. Sometimes a girl was with him, sometimes he was alone, and sometimes he would come home sober and drink later. He started giving them harsh punishments; some of them more physical than others.
Because of this, Jeanine and Max primarily stuck together, and had very few friends. But this changed when Max was twelve and Jeanine was sixteen; a teacher saw one of Jeanine's bruises -- a dark one, running all down her side, and she was sent to the principles office. They soon found that Max had injuries as well, and they were questioned. It didn't take long for them to crack, and the truth spilled out, and several weeks later, they were taken from the house and Sam was thrown in jail.
They bounced from home to home, staying together. Some houses were better than others, and I can't say they were never touched again, but it was only a year and a half before Jeanine died.
She had been known to flirt with boys, even sleep with them, but this time it went too far. Jeanine was walking back from school, with Max at her side, when a previous lover came at her. He was drunk and upset, but when he grabbed Jeanine, Max delivered several blows to his side, and Jeanine clapped her hands over his ears, disorienting him enough for Jeanine and Max to take off running.
They lost the boy quickly, but they also got lost in the process. That was the first time they encountered a monster, and I think you can put together the rest. Max called an ambulance, but was unable to explain what hurt her, and they weren't able to save her.
The funeral was small, Max still has no idea who payed for it, but she there was one other person who showed up. Max didn't know her, and didn't really care. She had been laying on the ground, crying over her grave, when the women came over to her. All she did was kiss Max on the forehead, drop a locket onto the ground, and walk away wordlessly. Max didn't think much about it, but kept the locket nonetheless.
Max continued going from house to house, never staying anywhere for very long. She got into fights at school, her grades dropped, and she honestly just stopped caring.
It was a year after Jeanine died, when Max was almost fifteen, that she ran away. She didn't really care where she went, she just saw nothing for her. She spent most of her time avoiding cop cars and avoiding being raped that she quickly toughened up. Was it enough to keep her out of trouble, keep her from getting hurt? No. But she did learn to take care of herself.
She was taken into custody several times, imprisoned, put back into a home, escaped, on the run, imprisoned. The cycle continued for two and a half years. The last time she was taken into custody, she had a cellmate who claimed she was special, that she needed to be taken to this camp, and she had nothing to loose, so she went with him. The cellmate was placed there by Camp Half Blood, in order to bring her to camp.
They manipulated the mist to make everyone believe that Max was dead, and they gave her a new last name, Darke, with a new history, manipulating the mist easily. She went to camp, learned to play well with others, learned to fight, and honestly? She really liked camp.
She lived out the rest of her days in the camp, and became a counselor when she was turned 18.
