What Makes Them Them
Personality Description: Cypress is a confident girl. She loves using her demigod powers and impressing people with them. She is super outgoing and loves being in the spotlight. She loves attention and totally craves it, and will go to any means to get it. Cypress loves it when people comment on her hair, and loves doing crazy things with it. She is totally social, has tons of friends, and likes all of them. She will always find time to hang with you. She is very loyal to everyone she likes and can throw punches if necessary. She doesn't take crap from anybody. She loves cooking and is obviously good at it.
In addition to all this, Cypress can be very over-the-top romantic. She doesn't flirt, and doesn't need to—she's prettier than some of the Aphrodite girls. She can catch the eye of any boy. She is also very naïve—she's very positive and thinks everything will turn out well. She is kind of like a young teenager in this way. She is very upbeat and loves fantasy—more than her actual life. She's also pretty curious, which can get her in trouble and why she's kind of like a pixie.
She loves pranking people, sorta like a Hermes kid, but she's not that stealthy and that can get her in trouble. She also cannot lie or exaggerate to save her life, and sometimes tells truths that can make people uncomfortable—think Luna Lovegood.
Likes: French things, fancy things, her siblings, the gods, almost everything.
Dislikes: Hades kids, goth people, people who hate her, people who hate people she likes, Glee.
Fears: Hades children, Ares children, Zeus (shhh).
Secrets: She doesn't really like her current job as a counselor.
Ambitions: To become a famous singer, and to get a boyfriend.
Powers: Cooking, Chlorokinesis
Family and History
Personal History: Gordon Hayler needed some coffee. He had a free half-hour before that new client came, and really, his officemate Valerie had been raving about this new non-chain café down on East Warbler Road. According to Val, it had “real coffee, good-quality pastries, and eye candy.” Geez, Val sounded like one of those TV people. But really, Val had good taste, and he needed a break from Starbucks. So here he was, driving his old clunky Chevrolet to Déesse Café. Déesse means goddess in French, but really, how was Gordon supposed to know that? He parked his old Chevrolet on the curb and walked over, past Best Cleaners and East Warbler Thai, to Déesse Café.
There was only one person behind the counter. A woman, maybe in her thirties, her hair long, thick, wavy, and the color of dirty straw. She was wearing a long gray skirt, black long-sleeved shirt, gray button sweater, and a black ribbon in her hair. She wore no makeup, but yet her face seemed to glow. Gordon couldn’t tear his eyes away as he placed his order, dieu de la mer foccacia (sea god foccacia) and sirène latte (siren latte). She moved so swiftly, and his order, ready on porcelain plate and mug, was ready soon.
He bit into the foccacia. He took a sip of the latte. Val had been totally right. Demeter had won a new regular customer.
He came there at least once a day, and soon he and Demeter—or “Demi Cantarin”, as she introduced herself to him as—were good friends. She knew his order off the top of her head (yes, foccacia and a latte). They both were beginning to develop a more romantic liking for the other.
One day when business was slack, only three months after their meeting (yet he came several times per day on average), Demi sat with him instead of baking a special order of croissants déesse de l'amour for a party. They talked for thirty minutes until Gordon blabbed, “Willyougooutwithme?”
Demeter said yes before she’d really stopped to consider the matter. She did like Gordon, after all. They arranged to meet at an Italian restaurant the following night. They lived in adjacent apartments for three months.
Then Demeter found out she was pregnant on a cold October night, in 1989. Her due date was June 20th, the Summer Solstice. She took this as a good omen.
On June 17th at 8:12 PM, Demeter went into labor. She gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, at 9:48 PM. The boy died at 12:32 AM, June 18th. His lungs didn’t work properly. The girl was named Cypress Emilie. Before he died, the boy’s name was Finn.
Demeter left on September 20th, when Cypress was three months old. When Cypress was one year old, Gordon married Elanna Sanchez, a woman he met at his workplace. Halan had an eight-year-old daughter, Sadie Sanchez, whom she had adopted from Europe. Sadie was used to being spoiled.
When Cypress was three, she was diagnosed with dyslexia, but not ADHD. She was one of the worst kids in her class, which her teacher pointed out during winter conferences. The following semester monsters attacked the school. The Mist made it look like Cypress had been involved in it and she was thrown out.
It was pure chance and coincidence that Cypress should meet Artemis in the woods a few blocks from her home on her second week being “homeschooled.” Artemis recognized a demigod when she saw one. She sent a satyr named Robert to become her “math tutor” and feed her information. Robert filled Gordon in on the current situation. Gordon, recognizing a familiar conversation from his days with Demi, believed it. Robert and Gordon drove Cypress to camp and, on the way, explained the strange occurrences and where they were going. Cypress didn’t need persuading. Finally, everything made sense. She drifted off into a sleep until a loud noise awoke her.
A small monster, maybe six feet tall, was attacking them. Cypress dropped to the ground, half through the entrance to Camp Half-Blood. Nobody ever heard from Robert or Gordon again.
When Cypress awoke, she was in camp. She was told she had been in there four days. She headed to the Hermes cabin soon after.
Around the campfire eleven days afterwards, Cypress found herself wearing a dress made of leaves and wheat woven into an elaborate gown, with a makeshift daisy crown upon her head. She had been claimed by Demeter on her birthday. June 17th.
After taking a three-year break from camp at eighteen, Cypress returned at twenty-one to help run the camp.
