Cypress hummed as she walked down to the volleyball court, her curly blond hair waving in the near-spring wind of Camp Half-Blood. Her makeup was elaborately done, though it was a Sunday—she always needed to look nice, or else she wouldn't feel right. That was just so Cypress. Makeup on a weekend. Not that she was an obnoxious Aphrodite kid or anything, she was nothing like that! She just loved feeling like every day was special. In Cypress's life, every day was a fairy tale!
She liked that. Today is a fairy tale, she would tell herself. Today is special. You are special. Of course, she wasn't. She was just an ordinary girl. Or woman, technically, though she was naïve and appeared years younger than she was. A teenager, maybe, seventeen, five years younger than her actual twenty-two years as a human being. Okay, maybe she was a bit special. She was a demigod, after all...Demeter was her mother. That had to count for something in the special department. Also, she'd made it twenty-two years into her life...when you do have gods for parents, that should count for something.
Cypress was skipping against the wind, causing some of her hair to fly back in a position which she and her friends had dubbed the "Beyoncé fan," since Beyoncé always seems to have that kind of hair in her music videos. And yes, she was skipping. Like an eight-year-old...she loved believing life was happy and pure and peaceful. Cypress has no idea how much the world sucks.
Finally, she reached her destination, the volleyball court. She was usually alone their, but today, apparently not. She was staring at the back of Finn McCain, a fellow counselor.
