A few weeks into autumn, and life at camp was already pretty settled into the post-summer monotony. Most of the summer-only campers had left for school, to go be normal. Tal had used to be one of them. She'd return to northern Florida and spend her days at school and with her friends and scooping ice cream. But now, she was one of the year-rounders...but this didn't exactly mean that the demigods who still resided at camp once summer days were over were excused from schoolwork. So maybe they'd been a little iffy over the summer, thanks to the sickness. But now, schools all over the country were starting up again...being a CL, Tal knew that the camp directors really wanted — and needed — to get the camp's schedule at least somewhat back on track. And that meant school for all the campers.
That was what Tal was doing right now...school. Well, not school specifically, but homework. It was only a couple of paragraphs on monster fighting techniques, but it felt like so much more...things like that always feel like more when something else is weighing on your mind. Tal had caught herself misspelling words and the simplest homonyms, her handwriting had gotten consistently worse as the paper took shape, and her sentences kept becoming completely rambly. The wording was awful and her twin Em would probably be completely appalled if she showed her work to her...it was well below Tal's average. She was one of the demigods that did actually try during school, and for the most part, her stuff was at least passable.
But this? No. Groaning as she crumpled up the notebook paper in her right hand and aimed for the trash can near the cabin door (it landed about a yard to the left, in the direct center of the floor in front of said door), Tal got up, slipped on her brown Ugg boots (the ones that Em had picked out for her, saying that they matched her hair perfectly), threw her hair into some pathetic excuse for a ponytail, and exited the cabin. She needed to clear her mind. Of what, she didn't really know.
Her plan had simply been to go out to the strawberry fields and, well, hang with the satyrs for a little bit. They always seemed to calm her down, with their goofy personalities and cute reed-pipe songs...but that plan was pretty thrown when Tal ran right smack into one of the last people she would ever want to run into: Seri Winchester. Cabin Leader of the Ares cabin, one of the best — if not the best — fighters in camp, sister of her boyfriend — was he her boyfriend? Practically ex now, she had to be honest with herself — and one of the people that hated Tal's guts. And oh, the feeling was so mutual. "Sorry!" she said hastily, although it came out as more of a nervous squeak. She would have liked to leave, but honestly...Seri was so intimidating that she couldn't just dart away after running into her. She had to wait and see what the daughter of Ares would say.
