There was a blanket of weariness settling over camp, something that couldn't even be disguised with preppy sparkle eyeshadow and lots of smiles. In every conversation that campers had with each other, there was the unspoken elephant in the room; that elephant was made out of two things — the flu that was currently going around camp and the prophecy that the Oracle had spewed at the beginning of the summer. Add the fact that it was such a serious matter that a quest was in the works, and there was no way there was a single camper still apathetic to the situation. Skye — the girl who had brought the prophecy to camp and alerted everybody about how dire the situation actually was — had this on her mind as she sat on a bench in the center of the cabin commons, drawing in the dirt on the ground with her foot. The tip of her Converse sneaker was getting dirty, but it had already been doodled on with black Sharpie pen, so it wasn't like it really mattered. And it seemed stupid to think about stuff as tiny as dirt on sneakers — that could easily be dusted off — when there were other things to worry about.
Though she wasn't one of the people bedridden with the flu, Skye wasn't feeling too amazing that day. Unlike her normal morning routine, her face was makeupless (aside from a bit of concealer) and she had thrown her hair into a ponytail, ignoring the flatiron that was in plain sight across the room from her bed. Her blond hair just kind of hung there — it didn't bounce, it didn't curl or fluff. She didn't have anything to do, nor was there much that she wanted to do. She had no idea where Bailey was — she'd checked the Hermes cabin and the big house before giving up (far too soon than she normally would have). And if she was quite honest with herself, she didn't really feel like looking for Pandora or Amber, her two best girlfriends at camp. The two of them were stuck in some feud with each other, and whenever she hung out with one, the other somehow found out and accused her of picking sides. Why didn't they just understand that she had no idea what was going on between them, nor did she want to know? She wanted to be friends with both of them. She wanted to be friends with both of them. Why did Panda and Amber have to make it so hard? The last thing Skye wanted was to be dragged into her friends' feud...it seemed as though the two were set on making that happen.
It wasn't like she didn't want to hang out with them, but the both of them had been acting so damn different. Especially Amber, she thought with a frown. Ever since she had fallen in the infirmary due to lack of sleep, she hadn't been the same — it was as though the fall had damaged her happiness as well as her head. Her friend wasn't permanently injured or anything, Skye knew that much, but inwardly she wondered if it had been the fall. Although, if she really thought hard, she could recall several instances before that where Amb had been moodier than her usual optimistic self. Frowning, not laughing at Skye's astronomically crappy jokes, hiding behind her thick hair. It was like her body had been taken over by a different being entirely. Who was this moody new girl, and what had she done with Skye's happy, hyper, high-on-life friend?
Skye had been so absorbed in her thoughts, she hadn't even noticed that the girl she was thinking of was only a few yards away from her, stepping out of the Apollo cabin. The bandage was still on her head, but people paid less attention to it now than before. "Amb!" Skye blurted before she could stop herself. She sprung up and flounced over to her friend, greeting her with an inside joke. "Your bag has a new look!" she said as brightly as she could muster, hoping that that could kick off a conversation. When was the last time she and Amber had had a normal, happy conversation? Had it really been midsummer? The "your-bag-has-a-new-look" episode? It felt like so much longer. She could barely remember before Amber as she knew her disappeared.
Cocking her head to read her friend's expression, Skye waited.
